Speed Measurements with the 350D

CF Card Write Speed

Simple experiment: Format your memory card first and change to RAW format. Then set everything to manual and keep the shutter release pressed down for a while, say 10, 20 or 40 pictures. With a stopwatch, measure how long the red (write) light is on -- it will stay on for a while after you release the shutter release.

Results so far:

With Viking 128MB card: 10 RAW pictures, each 6.3MB, writes in 45 seconds: 1.4 MB/sec

With Lexar 512MB card: 33 RAW pictures, each 6.3 MB, writes in 45 seconds: 4.6 MB/sec

Not an insignificant difference. I'm looking forward to seeing if a larger card gives even better performance.

Using JPG pictures instead, again filling up the buffer and going on beyond it for a while:

With Lexar 512MB card: 22 JPG pictures, 91.6 MB used = 4.16 MB/sec.

In order to be comparable with Rob Galbraith's measurements, I tried taking just 6 RAW/12 JPG pictures.

With Lexar 512MB card: 6 RAW @ 6.3 MB, writes in 11 seconds: 3.4 MB/sec
