In August 2005, we're moving into a new place in Århus, Denmark. In preparation for this move, I made a fairly exact house plan and a set of cut-out furniture markers, both in Dia. While Dia was slightly uncooperative in a few respects, it went better than I initially expected, and we're using a photocopy of the final furniture layout (stuck to the plan with stick-tack:) for showing the movers where to put stuff.
Some hints on how to do house plans:
- Use layers! Put different kinds of things on different layers. This allows you to switch showing them on and off and also reduces the risk of attaching to a connectionpoint that you don't intend to attach to. I ended up with seven layers total.
- Use a realistic thickness line for your interior walls. Much easier than trying to form them to correct width.
- Use Polygon for the outer walls, Line/PolyLine for the inner ones, and Beziergon for doors.
- Print the furniture cutouts on as sturdy a paper as your printer will allow and stick a bit of sticky-tack on the back.
- Make a grid to scale that prints as well (hmmm... maybe an option to print the grid would be nice).
